Background
Since 2002, The Michigan Sugar Company (comprised of growers, processors and industry representatives) has had access to a weather-based fungicide spray program called BEETcast. Cercospora Leafspot is one of the most serious foliar diseases affecting sugarbeets. BEETcast has proven extremely valuable in providing accurate timing of fungicides to control Cercospora Leafspot. This fungal disease causes small dead areas or spots on the leaves; and under favourable weather conditions will turn the whole leaf black. This will result in a “firing” symptom, which causes losses in crop yields and a reduction in the sugar content. Researchers from the Michigan Sugar Company, along with pathologists from Michigan State University, have verified the accuracy of BEETcast. Significant improvement in sugarbeet yields and sugar content have been gained since the adoption of BEETcast.
